My name is Sophie, I am a 26 year old German girl, currently living in the Pittsburgh area with my lovely American boy our precious little man and our two dogs Penny and Melvin.
I named this blog after one of my favorite poems by William Ellery Channing
To live content with small means;
to seek elegance rather than luxury,
and refinement rather than fashion;
to be worthy, not respectable,
and wealthy, not, rich;
to listen to stars and birds,
babes and sages, with open heart;
to study hard; to think quietly,
act frankly, talk gently,
await occasions, hurry never;
in a word, to let the spiritual,
unbidden and unconscious,
grow up through the common
- this is my symphony.
I have loved this poem since the first time I read it and it is something I would like to live my life by. It reminds me to take a step back and look at what's really important to me rather than get lost in all of the chaos that is life ;) So whenever I have a bad day or I'm feeling sorry for myself or I hurt someone's feelings, this lovely symphony gets me back on track. Did I just sound too mushy? lol ;)
So back to this about page thing...

If you'd like to find out how this German girl ended up with this American guy and moved all the way across the ocean then keep reading...
I met my husband in 2003 while he was visiting one of my friends in Germany. He had just finished his first year of college and saved up enough money to make that famous Euro Trip ;) We were so young but we fell madly in love and even though he only stayed for 3 short weeks we both knew it was meant to be. So we spent the next two years extremely long-distance-dating and this is when I should have started my first blog...
Living so far apart was hard, especially being as young as we were. In the end however, we made it through all of the tough times, being alone when you really needed someone and the late night phone calls and video chats while college room mates were trying to sleep or rolling their eyes at us. We got engaged at Christmas time 2003 and married in July 2005. Even after we were married it still took us until May 2006 before I could finally move to the States to start our life together. Greencard paperwork is no joke people! I guess this is when I should have started my second blog...
After moving from Germany to the States we lived with my husbands family for almost two years. During that time we decided we needed our own nest and with the help of his family we started building our house in the early summer of 2007. I took us about 13 months to get it move-in ready. While building the hubby was working full-time and I was going to school full-time. We also adopted our first baby, little Yorkiepoo Melvin who is now 4. And again, this is when I should have started my third blog, man would I have had a lot to write about ;)
The house turned out wonderfully and we couldn't have done it without the help of our families. The building process was such a great experience and we learned so much. You truly get an appreciation for all the work that goes into building and maintaining a house when you do it yourself. While building we frequented Lowes so much that one of the ladies at the return desk once jokingly mentioned that we must be building an entire house... You should have seen her face when we told her that we actually were.
Of course there are still little things here and there that we are working on as we find time or change our minds about paint colors and such. We tried faux finishing the walls in the living room once and it went horribly wrong. It ended up looking like we had, had a water line break and leak through the wall ;) But hey, you learn as you go.
So now that we have been married for almost 6 years, graduated college, found jobs, built a house, adopted two lovely puppies and produced one handsome little guy, I guess it is finally time for me to start this blog that I should have started many, many years ago ;)
And even though so much has already happened in our short lives, there still is a ton of stuff to blog about since this house and its people are constantly evolving...
So if you come back, which I hope you do, you will hopefully see this little blog evolve too.
And if you've read all of this and I haven't scared you away yet, please feel free to leave me a comment, shoot me an email or follow this blog. I would love to hear from you :)
